We are about a quarter of the way through the season and a lot has happened. Week 4 brought us some shocking performances…both good and bad. Today we’re going to be focusing on the bad ones. Here are the three worst performances from Week 3, and what they mean:
Breece Hall
This week the Jets took on the Broncos in a game that was not fun for either team (or anybody who watched it, for that matter). The Broncos ended up on top after a series of missed field goals toward the end of the fourth quarter. While no one had a particularly good statistical performance in this game, Breece Hall stood out as the most disappointing player. Hall finished the game with 10 rushes for 4 yards along with 2 receptions for 14 yards. Even worse for Hall fantasy owners, rookie RB Braelon Allen rushed the ball 8 times for 34 yards. Hall also failed to punch the ball in the end zone on multiple goal line carries.
There is good news and bad news for Hall fantasy owners. The good news is that this was Hall’s worst game of the season. He will never rush for less than 5 yards again in 2024. This is rock bottom we can only go up, so I wouldn’t hesitate to put him in your starting lineup for Week 5. The bad news is that Allen is here to stay. When Hall was drafted as a Top 5 fantasy player, owners did not expect him to be splitting carries at all. He was supposed to have the Jets backfield all to himself, part of the reason why he was viewed as so valuable. Now, Allen will be taxing each Hall fantasy performance with some points of his own. Breece is still an RB1, but players like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry have proven that they are better fantasy backs going forward.
Tyreek Hill
This is the second consecutive day I am writing about Tyreek Hill. Yesterday I picked him to notch more than 50 receiving yards. Even with the absence of Tua Tagovailoa, I was still a big Hill supporter. After last night’s game, I have seen enough. Hill finished with 4 receptions for 23 yards and 3 carries for 19 yards. The Dolphins tried to get him the ball, but there are just too many missing pieces on offense for Hill to put up serious numbers.
This is a really unfortunate situation because it’s not Hill’s fault at all. Last night you could see him visibly frustrated on the sideline that he wasn’t able to have a real impact on the game. Here is my advice to Hill fantasy owners: Don’t trade him, don’t start him. It might seem ridiculous to not start the consensus 2nd overall pick in fantasy football, but it has to be done. Tua is scheduled to come back shortly after the Dolphins bye week. Until then, treat Hill as if he is an injured player. Once Tua is healthy, Tyreek will be ready to make an impact in time for the fantasy playoffs. Hill has had a frustrating start to the season, but if you stick with him, it could pay off big time.
Kyle Pitts
Oh Kyle Pitts. Many people view him as a professional tight end, I view him as a con artist. He was able to deceive me into thinking he was a great fantasy tight end four years in a row. I have written a haiku to express my relationship with Pitts:
“Please don’t draft Kyle Pitts
True master of deception
He will score zero points”
If you are ever confused about whether you should rely on Pitts, just refer back to that poem.
I really thought that things were going to be different for Pitts this year. He was touted as one of the best tight end prospects of all time coming out of college. Now, after years of Desmond Ridder, he finally got the opportunity to play with a QB who could actually throw the ball. However, we are four weeks in and nothing has really changed. Pitts is getting 2-3 receptions a game, this week he had 0, and he hardly ever finds the end zone. It’s time for me to finally accept that Pitts is not the player I thought he was. My advice to my fellow Pitts owners: trade him, bench him, drop him, just for the love of god do not let him play another game in your starting lineup. I know I won’t.
I feel a lot better now that I’ve vented about Kyle Pitts. Hill and Hall both have some issues they are facing, but they will be fine long term. I will be back next week to assess the worst performances of Week 5. Hopefully none of my fantasy players disappoint me so much that I have to write another poem.
