The New York Giants were one of the most surprising teams last season as nobody predicted they would make the playoffs. The expectation was for the Giants to make the playoffs again. Unfortunately, the Giants couldn’t achieve that as they have been eliminated from the 2023 NFL Playoffs. Many issues plagued the Giants this season, but there are three main reasons why they fell short of reaching the playoffs.
3. Daboll and Martindale’s relationship was not strong on the New York Giants sideline.
Yeah, this has to be mentioned. Both Brian Daboll and Wink Martindale are strong coaches in this league. However, it was clear that both could not get along with each other. It showed on the sidelines, and the disagreement definitely had an impact on the culture. While the defense was coached well, and Daboll is still a very good coach, the constant bickering between the two was not going to work. It heavily impacted this team and was a reason why the Giants didn’t make the playoffs. The coaching staff just could not get along.
2. Evan Neal has had a disastrous season
The offensive line has mainly been inconsistent this year. So many players did not play well, but the most notable lineman issue comes from from Evan Neal. Neal has had a tumultuous season for the Giants as his performance has been abysmal. It reached a point where he even ended up blocking his own teammate. Consistent poor showings aside, Neal didn’t help his case by dismissing his critics. Neal even called the critics sheep and even calling them ‘hotdog and hamburger flippers.’ Adding to his woes, Neal also suffered an injury this season. It’s safe to say this hasn’t been a good year for Evan Neal.
The Giants were expecting Neal to progress in his development. Unfortunately he has regressed a lot both on and off the field. As the former 7th overall pick in the draft, the Giants are now hoping he’ll show improvement next season; otherwise, Neal risks being labeled a bust.
1. Inconsistency at the QB position
With the significant injuries plaguing the Giants this season, the most inconsistent position was at Quarterback. Daniel Jones was expected to be the starting QB due to the sizable contract he received. However, injuries once again sidelined him, ending his season due to a torn ACL. It seems Jones just can’t catch a break; despite his talent, his availability remains a challenge. Tyrod Taylor faced similar issues, either struggling to stay healthy or showing inconsistency on the field. While Tommy DeVito displayed moments of brilliance and became something of a sensation in New York, he lacks the necessary talent to be a full-time franchise QB in the NFL. The inconsistency at the QB position significantly hurt the Giants this season and was the primary reason why they fell short.
Where do the New York Giants Go From Here?
The Giants should not part ways with the coaches. It’s not the coaches’ fault the injuries happened, and the only coach that will probably go is the offensive line coach. On defense, Wink Martindale is absolutely going to be fired. As for the team on the field, the Giants have to regroup and retool the entire team, especially on the offensive side of the football.
Evan Neal has been a disaster, and a move at guard is a must. If he refuses, honestly, the Giants have to trade or release him. Neal has regressed further in his development. The Giants need to get another tackle in the draft, and it is time to get another QB, as Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor are always hurt, and Tommy Devito is not a great option either. Next year is going to be a big year for the Giants that could make or break jobs for the organization.
