The 2023 NFL Season has been a rollercoaster ride for the New York Jets, with numerous high and low moments. Regrettably, the Jets will not be participating in the playoffs, having been eliminated. Several factors contributed to their exclusion, but three main reasons stand out as to why the Jets failed to secure a playoff spot.
3. There never was a Plan B, if Rodgers got injured
Lets be honest here, the Jets Season took a tremendous nosedive the moment Aaron Rodgers suffered his Achilles injury 4 plays into the season. It just sucks and automatically made this season a tremendous What If scenario. With Rodgers out, it was clear that there was no pure backup plan. Zach Wilson was pretty much done as the quarterback of the New York Jets last season, and this year did him no favors. Trevor Siemian is awful as the quarterback and Tim Boyle is a scrub. This team offensively never recovered with Rodgers being injured in that game against the Buffalo Bills, especially on offense.
2. The Offensive Line for the New York Jets is Terrible
Regardless of who took the quarterback position for the Jets, their offensive line provided no assistance. Injuries struck at the center position, affecting the team with Connor McGovern and Wes Schweitzer getting hurt.
Laken Tomlinson’s form has been subpar this year, while Duane Brown seems to have surpassed his prime. Max Mitchell’s performance has been only average, Billy Turner’s contributions have regressed, and rookie Carter Warren has encountered more struggles than successes. The most significant letdown has been Mekhi Becton. He transitioned from a potentially strong franchise blindside blocker in his rookie season to a liability on the offensive line. His declining performances, along with his seemingly indifferent demeanor while heading to the locker room, hint that Becton might not be a part of the team in the upcoming season. Perhaps parting ways would be beneficial for both parties involved
1. The Coaching has been terrible
One thing that has been proven this season is that the Jets are a very poorly coached team. Especially on offense as Nathanial Hackett has been an awful offensive coordinator this season leading and coaching one of the worst offenses in not only New York Jets, but NFL history. Saleh has not been a great coach either with a very poor coaching record and often times this team has been undisciplined. It is a weekly problem that has never been fixed and that is all on coaching.
Where do the New York Jets go from here?
The first step should have been firing the entire coaching staff and GM Joe Douglas for the season’s failure. However, recent revelations suggest that no one will be dismissed at the season’s end, so that option is off the table. One undeniable fact is that the Jets urgently need to revamp their offense, which performed terribly. Specifically, the offensive line was exceptionally poor, with the exception of Joe Tippman. It’s imperative to part ways with every offensive lineman on the team. Every position requires additional depth, including running back and wide receiver. Improvement is needed across the board on offense, and it would be wise for the Jets to use their first-round pick on an offensive player. This team is in a do-or-die situation where making the playoffs is crucial to preserving jobs
