The time has come for the Washington Commanders. The initial excitement surrounding Eric Bienemy’s appointment as the offensive coordinator and the departure of Dan Snyder as the team’s owner has waned. The Commanders have been eliminated from contention in the 2023 NFL Playoffs, and several problems plagued this team. Among the myriad issues, there are three primary reasons behind their elimination.
3. Sam Howell is not the guy at QB
When the Washington Commanders originally drafted Sam Howell in the 2022 NFL Draft, he was a very intriguing prospect. When he was named the team’s starter, it presented a significant opportunity for the former 5th rounder. However, this season has seen Howell struggle more than succeed. His recent benching for Jacoby Brissett, who performed significantly better, highlighted Howell’s difficulties. Despite the talent among their receivers like Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, the offense as a whole can’t thrive without a true franchise QB, and it’s evident that Washington does not currently have one.
2. Why did the Washington Commanders not fire Jack Del Rio Last season?
The Defense has been a significant issue this year for the Commanders, and a notable reason is coaching. The Commanders acknowledged this a year too late by firing Jack Del Rio. It was surprising that Del Rio remained as the defensive coordinator after making comments comparing the January 6 insurrection to the George Floyd protests. His consequence for these remarks was getting fined 100,000 dollars from the organization. Despite the defensive talent on the team, the Commanders should have performed much better, leading to Del Rio’s departure.
1.Why is Ron Rivera Still here?
Ron Rivera is undoubtedly one of the more respected coaches and figures in the NFL. However, it might be time for the Commanders to consider a change. The team has appeared unmotivated and poorly coached over the past few seasons. Frankly, it was surprising that the Commanders retained Rivera after he admitted not being aware that the team could have been eliminated during last year’s playoff push. It’s a fundamental aspect of coaching to be aware of your team’s potential elimination. Nevertheless, during Dan Snyder’s tenure, Rivera was one of the few ethical pillars within the organization. With new ownership in place, they often seek to bring in their preferred personnel. Therefore, it wouldn’t be unexpected if Rivera is let go this season.
Where do the Washington Commanders go from here?
One thing is certain: Ron Rivera will not return as the head coach. Regardless, hiring a new head coach or possibly promoting Eric Bieniemy will be Step 1 for the Commanders. The next crucial step is securing a franchise quarterback, as it’s evident that Sam Howell isn’t the future franchise QB. Jacoby Brissett also doesn’t fit the bill; he’s become a journeyman who struggles with consistency and injuries, making him unsuitable for a full-time starting role. Fortunately for the Commanders, they’re likely to obtain a Top 5 pick in the first round, presenting a significant opportunity in a draft loaded with talented QB prospects. The organization faces a time of change, especially with new ownership involved, and it will be interesting to see if Martin Mayhew remains the GM. Only time will tell.
